Their family grew stronger with the presence of two children, Jack and Michael. Jack, the eldest brother, was born around 2007, so he is now in his thirties. On the other hand, Michael, their youngest son, was born on May 5, 2005, and is now in his late teens. The lucky meeting that paved the way for their love story happened in the early 1990s.
Bill, then an undergraduate assistant coach on the Georgia Tech football team, met Colleen at an Atlanta sports bar celebration. The mood was one of joy after Georgia Tech’s stunning overtime win against North Carolina. Bill fondly remembers the event, describing it as love at first sight. Mutual friends, especially tight ends coach Doug Marrone, helped arrange their meetings.
Colleen, who was there as a guest of Marrone’s then-girlfriend and roommate, Helen Donnelly, found herself in the middle of a football celebration. Bill’s family, watching the sparks between the couple, offered their seal of approval. As Bill recalls,
“My parents and brother were also there. They met [Colleen] at first. And they are the ones who warn, ‘You better not mess it up.
Colleen recalls her first impressions of Bill, remembering his sense of humor despite the distraction of the many football games playing in the background.
“There were so many football games that he was more busy watching the game than talking to me,” she said with a laugh. “However, one thing I noticed about him was his sense of humor. “He’s very funny and very himself.”
Their path from that sports bar meeting to a quarter-century of shared fun and struggle shows the enduring power of love and laughter in their lives.
The Philanthropic Work of Bill And Wife Colleen O’Brien
In a great gesture of charity, Houston Texans coach Bill O’Brien and his wife, Colleen, showed compassion and community spirit in March 2020.
