Billy Eichner Under Fire For Blaming Homophobia Over ‘Bros’ Poor Performance

Billy Eichner’s new movie, “Bros,” hit theaters last weekend, but the box office numbers were disappointing.

Despite receiving an excellent Rotten Tomatoes score, an A CinemaScore and rave reviews from critics, the first gay rom-com to be given a wide theatrical release did not take off at the box office — and Billy Eichner blamed “homophobic freaks.”

“That’s the world we live in, unfortunately,” Eichner wrote on Twitter. “Despite rave reviews, great Rotten Tomatoes scores, A CinemaScore, etc., straight people, especially in certain parts of the country, didn’t show up for Bros. And that’s disappointing but that’s the reality.”

The “Lion King” actor continued in a different Tweet, “Everyone who is NOT queer homophobic should go see BROS tonight! You will have a blast! And it *is* special and unique to see this story on the big screen, especially for queer people who aren’t get this chance often. I love this movie so much. GO BROS!!!”

After Eichner tweeted his thoughts, blaming homophobia for the film’s failure, fans quickly responded. One Twitter user responded to Eichner, writing, “You keep telling us LGB conservatives not to go see it. Do you really think straight people in general who don’t signal that SJWs would be interested either way? Come on.”

And another user Tweeted at Eichner, “I don’t feel represented in movies about gay men. And representation is the only important thing about stories, right?”

I just feel underrepresented in movies about gay men. And representation is the only important thing about stories, right?

One Twitter user, who is part of the Gay community, took offense to Eichner’s Tweet. “As a Gay man, I can say with 100% certainty that I would rather hit my head on a sliding glass door than watch this movie,” the user wrote. “Don’t blame straight people and “homophobia”. It’s tiring. Your movie is just disgusting. 🤷🏻‍♂️”

And one Twitter user wrote, “No offense, but don’t tell me what to do…that’s my wife’s job. I don’t need to watch a certain movie to tell people I’m not homophobic. My friends and family know me, and I don’t care what strangers think. I don’t like to make welfare gestures.”

“Bros” opened in theaters this weekend, but came in with disappointing box office numbers, as it opened in fourth place with a paltry $4.8 million gross from 3,350 locations. Prior to its opening weekend, the film received rave reviews from critics, a great Rotten Tomatoes score, and an A CinemaScore.

The film was the first gay rom-com to be given a wide theatrical release and starred Billy Eichner, Luke Macfarlane, Ts Madison, Monica Raymund, and others. The official synopsis is as follows:

“This fall, Universal Pictures is proud to present the first romantic comedy from a major studio about two gay men who might, just might, stumble into love. Maybe. They are both very busy. From the violent comic mind of Billy Eichner (Billy on the Street, The Lion King 2019) and the brilliance of filmmakers Nicholas Stoller (The Neighbors, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and Judd Apatow (The King of Staten Island, Trainwreck), emerges. Bros, a smart, dazzling and touching comedy about how hard it is to find another acceptable human being to live with.”

“Bros” is showing in select US theaters.
