‘Black Crowes’ Settle Lawsuit With Former Drummer Over Music Royalties

Former ‘Black Crowes’ drummer Steve Gorman is settling his lawsuit with the band over what he says are unpaid royalties.

According to new legal documents, obtained by The Blast, Gorman and the group tentatively agreed to a deal that would resolve any financial issues between the two parties. The former drummer and his legal team told the court that both sides had agreed, and believed a signed agreement was just a few signatures away.

“The parties are actively engaged in settlement communications and are currently drafting the terms of the agreement that the parties currently anticipate will be an implemented settlement and dismissal of this action,” the filing said.

So how much money changed hands? Well, the exact amount is not listed in this document — and many times the details of the settlement are kept secret. But, we’re guessing the deal covers anything owed, as well as any future pieces of music.

We broke the story, Gorman is suing the band – including founding members Chris Robinson and Rich Robinson – questioning the accuracy of his royalty payments to the band and its music. The drummer claims the band made “various unexplained deductions” from his royalties, including “deductions for partnership expenses described as ‘management commissions,’ ‘lawyer fees’ and ‘overhead.'”

At this point, Groman said the group, “is not providing details on these alleged expenses that were deducted from [Gorman’s] royalty payments, don’t even have [the Crowes] explains how this cut fits in with” the group’s initial partnership.

The drummer addressed the situation in his 2019 autobiography, saying, “For over five years, my attorney and I have made repeated requests to review the Partnership’s books to verify the accuracy of my royalties and share payments, but Chris and Rich have consistently ignored them. my rights under the Partnership Agreement.”

Adding, “I’m sorry that this happened, because I’m still proud of the music we create as a band, but their behavior leaves me with no choice but to ask the court to order them to provide me with this information, which I’m entitled to under the partnership agreement and the law -our law.”

Of note, Gorman left the group to pursue other musical endeavors in 2001. He rejoined the group in 2005, only to be left out of the group’s rebirth in recent years.

In 2019, the band reunited, and toured in 2021 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the band’s debut ‘SHake Your Money Maker.’

Shockingly, the lead singer blamed Gorman for the band’s problems, saying, “Steve was one of those negative, manipulative forces in the band that we really didn’t want to deal with. To come back, we really have to do this very specific cleanse where we focus on both of us and let this be something positive.”
