US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Thursday he and South Korean foreign minister Park Jin shared “deep” concerns about growing military cooperation between North Korea and Russia.
Blinken and Park also said they discussed working together to implement a so-called advanced deterrence strategy to counter threats from North Korea and continue strategic cooperation with Japan.
“Our three countries have already taken steps to improve our joint response through real-time sharing of DPRK missile warning data, trilateral defense exercises and efforts to counter the DPRK’s malicious cyber activities.”

DPRK, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, is the official name of North Korea.
The United States, South Korea and Japan have denounced what they say is the flow of weapons and military equipment from North Korea to Russia, saying the movement of cargo from the remote country to Russia is proof.
North Korea and Russia have denied any arms deal despite their leaders promising closer military cooperation when they meet in September in Russia’s far east.

Park also said that after her meeting with Blinken, the two foreign ministers urged the North to scrap plans to launch spy satellites.
North Korea is preparing to launch a spy satellite after failing twice this year to put it into orbit.
South Korea said last week North Korea was in the final stages of preparations for the launch after apparently getting technical help from Russia.
South Korea’s military said on Monday it was on high alert after North Korea designated November 18 as “missile industry day” to mark the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile last year.
Blinken’s two-day visit to South Korea is the first by a US secretary of state in two and a half years and is part of a wider Asia trip that will include a stop in India. He was in the Middle East before Japan.
