Boston newlywed killed by shark while paddleboarding in the Bahamas

A newlywed from Boston was killed by a shark while on vacation in the Bahamas Monday, according to local police.

The 44-year-old woman was paddling with a brother about three-quarters of a mile from shore when the shark suddenly bit her around 11:15 a.m. in New Providence, Royal Bahamas police said.

A lifeguard saw the attack from the beach at the Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort and raced out to the couple in a boat to save them, police spokesman Sgt. Desiree Ferguson told reporters.

The lifeguard brought the two back to shore, where CPR was administered to the woman.

However, he suffered “serious injuries on the right side of his body,” including his hip and upper limbs, Ferguson said.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was removed from the beach. The woman’s identity was not immediately released.

Witnesses told a local shop the woman had just gotten married and the man she was riding with was her groom, but police could not immediately confirm if the couple were newlyweds.

“We offer our condolences…for this most unfortunate situation,” Police Sgt. Desiree Ferguson said during a press conference.

A jet ski operator told the Nassau Guardian that he saw the attack from the beach.

“It was crazy because… I saw them pushing off the beach,” he said of the pair. “They laugh and talk.”

When he looked back, he only saw the man on his board.

“When I saw only the man standing on the board, I said he must have fallen,” he said. “Then you can actually hear her weak screams screaming for help.”

Monday’s attack was the second shark attack in the Bahamas in nearly two weeks. Reuters

The woman’s death was the second shark attack in the Bahamas – where such attacks are relatively rare – in less than two weeks.

On November 21, a 47-year-old German woman went missing after she encountered a shark while diving in the waters off West End, Grand Bahama.

In September 2022, a 58-year-old American woman died after she was attacked by a shark while snorkeling with her family off the coast of New Providence.

Gavin Naylor, director of the International Shark Attack File program in Florida, told Boston.com that sharks in the area may have become accustomed to tourists watching them from boats and beaches.

“So the shark becomes accustomed, and the animal is a little less cautious than it might be,” Naylor said.
