Boston vandal damages Holocaust memorial, Paul Revere’s tombstone in ‘one-man crime spree’

A vandal has been arrested for carrying out a “one-man crime spree” through downtown Boston, smashing windows at the city’s Holocaust memorial, damaging a police cruiser and even vandalizing Paul Revere’s tombstone.

Lawrence Hawkins, 46, is accused of breaking windows at eight different sites and defacing 20 headstones, including Revere’s Revolutionary War icon famous for warning colonists that “the British are coming” in 1775.

Hawkins, who lives in a shelter, allegedly threw bricks and rocks through the windows and doors of various businesses and federal buildings and the glass tower that makes up the New England Holocaust Memorial from late Saturday night into early Sunday morning, NBC10 Boston reported.

Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney Samuel Jones described Hawkins’ alleged vandalism as “a lone crime in downtown Boston” during a court hearing Monday, according to a local news station.

Hawkins is charged with vandalism, destruction of property, injury to a religious building and is expected to receive more charges for damage to federal property.

He was ordered held for a mental health evaluation and on $22,500 bail for all three charges.

“My goal is to make sure that he gets the help and services that he needs to stabilize to see if he understands the nature of the charges against him, which he doesn’t appear to be at this time,” said Robert Glotzer, Hawkins’ defense attorney, who also noted that he had a challenge trying to talk to the guy so far.

Boston police were just a few steps behind Hawkins during his reign of terror. Surveillance footage helped them realize that the same person was responsible for a string of odd acts of vandalism that began shortly after 11:30pm and continued past 3am

Investigators pieced together Hawkin’s movements through clips to capture the extent of the damage throughout the downtown area.

He was later arrested around 4:30 a.m. inside a shelter but again destroyed other people’s property after his release — this time targeting a cemetery.

Hawkins allegedly removed 14 headstones from the ground, causing them to break into small pieces, in the Granary Cemetery.

He vandalized another in the adjacent King’s Chapel Cemetery, the station reported.

During his court hearing Monday, Hawkins had several outbursts, including applause when the judge ordered him to undergo a mental health evaluation.

Hawkins’ attorney said he has a history of schizophrenia and post-traumatic stress disorder.
