Boy, 3, killed by stray bullet caused by ‘celebratory gunfire’ on New Year’s Eve

A 3-year-old boy in Tennessee was shot and killed by a stray bullet in his own home on New Year’s Eve in a horrific tragedy that authorities blamed on a “celebratory shooting.”

Little Brayden Smith was inside his family’s apartment in Northeast Memphis when a bullet went through a window and hit him Sunday around 6 p.m., police told Action News 5.

The child was rushed to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital but could not be saved. Memphis police confirmed his death Wednesday, local stations reported.

“Our hearts ache beyond repair for the loss of such a young and innocent life,” a GoFundMe page created to raise money to cover the child’s funeral costs stated.

Investigators believe the bullets came from shots fired by someone in another part of the apartment complex. The shooter is still at large.

Assistant Police Chief Don Crowe said the shooting may have been related to New Year’s Eve celebrations, with the suspect unloading a gun into the air.

“We’ve been trying to point out this month that celebratory shooting is illegal and celebratory shooting leads to tragic events like this and we just need to stop shooting these guns,” Crowe said, according to Action News.

The Memphis Touched by an Angel Foundation ministry made a donation to Brayden’s little family on Thursday in his memory.
