Football fans in Brazil rioted in the streets, burning cars and buses after Santos Football Club was relegated today for the first time in its 111-year history.
Santos — the team of legendary player Pelé who died last year — lost at home to Fortaleza 1-2 and were relegated to the second tier of Brazil’s domestic league after going five games without a win.
The disappointment caused several Santos players to kneel in tears on the pitch with supporters on the bench also shedding tears, according to the match recording.
But the sadness quickly escalated into angry violence.

Brazilian military police had to step in to protect players and refs as fans began throwing flares, fireworks and other objects onto the field, CBS Sports reported.
Some fans also tried to rush onto the playing field, forcing the athletes to run to the locker room for cover.
Outside the stadium, frustrated spectators set several cars, buses and other vehicles on fire and fought with responding officers.
Police in riot gear responded to the wild scene, where they used pepper spray and grenades to try to control the crowd.
