Brendan Fraser Apologizes For This ‘George Of The Jungle’ Stunt

Movie star Brendan Fraser has just apologized for a traffic jam in San Francisco that happened 25 years ago during the filming of “George of the Jungle.” The actor played the lead role in the hit comedy based on the older “Tarzan” in 1997.

The film was a huge success at the time and grossed $180 million at the box office. He resumed his role in the sequel in 2003. The actor’s recent film credits include “The Whale,” in which he played an overweight gay man.

Fraser recently looked back at his time filming “George of the Jungle” and apologized for a scene that left many San Francisco residents in a lurch. The actor joked that the incident was his fault and promised it wouldn’t happen again.

Fraser was at the Mill Valley California Film Festival on Thursday and apologized for the events that took place two and a half decades ago. The beloved actor recalled a moment during the filming of “George of the Jungle,” which took place on the Oakland Bay Bridge in San Francisco and caused a massive standstill across 8.4 miles.

While talking to SFGate at the Film Festival, Fraser explained that Disney had installed puppets in parachutes for the scene where his character saves a paratrooper. The audience, however, unconsciously thought it was a real person, causing a traffic jam to ensue.

“Disney put a mannequin hanging from the side of the parachute from the vertical side. It brought traffic to a standstill on both sides of the bridge,” the actor recalled. “My trailer is over there in the parking lot. I just remembered watching… Bridge.”

Brendan Fraser Says He’s Sorry

Fraser revealed that the issue at the time was so serious that “Oprah” was bothered to bring it to the public’s attention. “There was this fake parachute hanging from it. I turned on the TV, and ‘Oprah’ was interrupted because there was a special news report with a helicopter saying the parachute was hanging from the bridge,” he continued.

“And I’m going to – “wait a minute!’ I’m looking at helicopters and TVs — someone doesn’t pull a permit, someone’s going to be in trouble with the mayor’s office.” The actor went on to apologize for the incident.

“George of the Jungle” sees the actor playing the lead character who, like “Tarzan,” was raised in the African jungle by apes. In the film, George moves out of the jungles of Uganda after meeting and falling in love with Leslie Mann’s character, an English heiress in the film.

“The Whale” reportedly received standing ovations after premiering at festivals held in Venice, Toronto, and London. In the film, Fraser plays Charlie, a chubby reclusive teacher who runs his English course with his computer’s webcam disabled.

The character is only days away from dying of a heart attack and tries to talk to Ellie, his estranged daughter, played by Sadie Sink. The entire film was shot in the teacher’s small apartment and, at the end, received a standing ovation from the Venice Film Festival audience.

Fraser participated in a Q&A session after the film where he talked about what he had to go through to play a character who weighs at least 600 pounds. The actress revealed that physically, she had to spend four hours every day to wear the large bodysuit.

On the emotional side, Fraser works with about ten people who have previously suffered from obesity in varying degrees, as well as psychiatrists for eating disorders and the Obesity Action Coalition.
