While preparing for the role of Charlie in “The Whale,” Fraser worked closely with the Obesity Action Coalition, a non-profit organization committed to supporting and increasing access to treatment for individuals struggling with obesity. The 54-year-old is determined to treat the sensitive topic of obesity with respect, “and that means everything from Charlie’s body design to the way the character speaks, everything,” he explained, according to Greenwich Times.

The coalition connected Fraser with about ten people who shared their stories of living with obesity via Zoom. Fraser found that a common thread in their stories was the hurtful words and attitudes of adults in their early years that destroyed their confidence and self-esteem.

“It just exemplifies what forms a pattern of destroying young people’s confidence and then combining them with various causes, they can find themselves, like Charlie, eating to medicate,” Fraser said. “Suppressing the pain inside and experiencing the trauma with food reflects their feelings outwardly. And Charlie is the personification of that. So, I feel responsible for my role as their voice and champion,” he added.
