Brian Laundrie’s parents admit they worried after son said Gabby Petito was ‘gone’ — but never suspected murder

Brian Laundrie’s parents admitted they were worried about Gabby Petito’s well-being after their son called them days after the killing to tell them she was “gone.”

Christopher and Roberta Laundrie told the court in a deposition hearing that they were worried about their son’s girlfriend after she “shocked” him by calling them.

“He [Brian] wasn’t calm and he got really excited and told me something had happened — you know, ‘Gabby’s gone’ and he got really panicked. Everything was frantic and fast,” recalls Christopher.

“He was very panicked and he said he didn’t know what to do. He said, you know, ‘Can you help me?’ you know, and he might need a lawyer.”

When asked what he thought Brian meant by saying the 22-year-old was “gone,” his father said he “didn’t know what he meant.”

Petito was killed by Brian in August 2021.

Christopher – who, along with his wife, is being sued by Petito’s parents – said Brian wouldn’t reveal why he thought he needed a lawyer, only pleading with his father to help him during a “scattered” five-minute phone call.

Christopher and Roberta Laundrie told the court in a deposition hearing that they were worried about their son’s girlfriend after she “shocked” them by calling them, but insisted they had no idea she was dead.

The day before, Brian had spoken to Roberta twice for 17 minutes, but the mother said she was not informed by her son that Petito was “missing”.

She testified that she did not know what her son could have meant by the phrase, but said from the tone of her husband’s voice she knew it was “something serious.”

Roberta also disagreed with her husband about how panicked Brian was in the days after the murder, saying she thought he just sounded “disappointed” and “didn’t sound like himself.”

Father Brian Laundrie insisted his son didn’t tell him why he needed a lawyer when he called and “was not calm and he was very excited and told me what happened – you know, ‘Gabby’s gone’ and he became very panicked.” Instagram

“I knew something was wrong,” he said.

The Petito family’s attorney, Patrick Reilly, consistently questioned the parents as to why they didn’t assume “gone” meant the young woman was dead, but both dismissed any accusations, saying that Brian had asked them to call a lawyer, so they did, hiring Steve Bertolino .

They have sent Bertolino a $25,000 retainer to find a Wyoming-based law firm for their son.

“If he goes and leaves, do you think he needs a lawyer for that?” Reilly questioned Christopher.

A few days later, Brian would show up on their doorstep in Petito’s van and Christopher described his son as “a troubled kid”.

“Let’s connect the dots,” Reilly asked the father. “He told you Gabby is gone. He panicked, and he was upset. He’s like a kid who comes home, and he’s in trouble. Does that make you believe he killed Gabby?”

“No,” he replied, but then insisted he was “worried about Gabby.”

Both also testified that they did not know about the domestic dispute between Brian and Petito until it was reported in the news.

Bertolino has asked the judge for summary judgment in the case launched by Petito’s family.

If successful, it would avoid a trial and allow a judge to make a decision.

If denied, the trial is expected to begin on May 13.

The Laundry is expected to return to court on February 21.
