‘Bridgerton’ Actress Ruby Barker Says Netflix’s ‘Nobody’ Offers Support For Her ‘Deteriorating’ Mental Health
Ruby Barker became a household name after her character, Miss Mariana Thompson, was cast as a regular in the show’s first season. She was only a guest star in season 2 as Featherington’s cousin moved out and it looks like she may not make an appearance in the show’s third season, which will focus on the budding relationship between Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton).
While discussing her mental health on Oxford University’s LOAF Podcast (via The Daily Beast), Ruby said that she had “no support” from Netflix during her first psychotic break in 2019, shortly after she wrapped production on the first season of “Bridgerton.” He also claimed that he had a second in 2022 but “nobody” contacted him then, either.
“No one from Netflix, no one from Shondaland, because I’ve had two psychotic breaks from the show, has even called me or emailed me to ask if I’m okay or if I’m going to benefit of any kind. aftercare or support,” Barker said in a recent interview. “No one.”
‘My life changed drastically overnight but still no support’
He went on to say that Mariana’s scandalous pregnancy during the show’s first season affected his mental health, as he began to feel isolated from the rest of the cast. “During filming, I was deteriorating,” he said. “It was a very torturous place for me because my character was very isolated, very isolated, alone in this horrible situation.”
“When I went into the hospital a week after filming ‘Bridgerton’ Season 1, it was really closed and kept on the low-low because the show was going out,” he explained. “By the time the show came out, I had just gotten out of the hospital, my Instagram followers were growing, I had all these engagements to do… My life had changed drastically overnight and there was still no support and there was still no support during that time. So I try really hard to act like it’s ok and I can work and it’s not a problem.”
Ruby Barker Opens Up About Her Mental Health Struggles In May 2022

At the time, he thanked Netflix for “saving him” with his role in “Bridgerton.”

Now, on the LOAF podcast, Ruby says that she hasn’t really had any support from Netflix throughout her mental health struggles. I don’t want to go out and poop because then I’m not going to work anymore.”
Fortunately, the actress recently posted a side-by-side photo of her physical and mental changes that she says are the result of the “inner work” she’s been doing to “accept” who she is.
