French President Emmanuel Macron’s wife Brigitte Macron has revealed her relationship concerns from the start of dating the future French leader – including fears he would “fall in love with someone his own age” after transferring schools.
“My head is messed up,” said Brigitte Macron during a rare interview, given to the outlet Paris Match, and reported in the Daily Telegraph. “To me, boys like that are crippling.”
“Emmanuel had to go to Paris,” Macron revealed. “I told myself he was going to fall in love with someone [own] age. It didn’t happen.”
The couple’s age difference – he, 70, and she, 45 – remains a hot topic for the pair: Macron addressed the difference during a 2017 interview with Elle France, telling the outlet “there are times in your life where you have to make important choices .”
“Of course, we had breakfast together, me and my wrinkles, him with his youth, but it was like that,” Macron told Elle at the time. “If I didn’t make that choice, I would have missed out on my life. I have a lot of happiness with my children and, at the same time, feel that I have to live ‘this love’ as Prevert says, to be completely happy.”

The latest interview, translated and reported by the UK’s Daily Telegraph, revealed that Macron had significant concerns over the age difference, which eventually led to a scandal when it was revealed that he, a 40-year-old teacher, had been involved in a relationship with his 15-year-old pupil, Emmanuel .
France’s age of consent is 15, which is not enforced except in cases of sexual violence until the country passes that age into law, according to European newspaper Politico.
Emmanuel’s parents immediately decided to send him to a boarding school in Paris for the remainder of his studies, but that did not stop him from his relationship with Brigitte.

After Emmanuel left for Paris, Brigitte stopped teaching drama and instead led Latin classes. She is married but has been estranged from her husband for years. She divorced him shortly before marrying Emmanuel.
She is also worried about how the relationship with the teenager will affect her children, who are Emmanuel’s age. Brigitte said she waited a decade before making the decision to ensure the couple’s marriage would not trouble the rest of her family.
“I take my time so I don’t ruin their lives,” Brigitte told Match. “That lasted for 10 years, time to put them on track. You can imagine what they heard. But I don’t want to miss my life.”
When the couple married in 2007, when Emmanuel was 29, he told his three stepchildren, “Thank you for accepting us, an abnormal couple.”
He won the election as president of France at the age of 39 – the youngest president for the country and about the same age as his wife when they met, according to The Independent.
