Pop star Britney Spears has shared many details about her ex-boyfriend, Justin Timberlake, in her new memoir, “The Woman In Me.”
Many of her famous friends have spoken out about the memoir, including the director of the “Overprotected: The Darkchild Remix” music video, Chris Applebaum, who shared a two-word broken text that the “Cry Me A River” singer wrote to the pop star while she was on set.

On April 22, 2022, “Overprotected: The Darkchild Remix” music video director Chris Applebaum took to Instagram to share his version of events long before his memoir was scheduled to be released on October 24, 2023. He shared a photo of himself standing next to Britney Spears “before I grew a beard” before her explain his version of events.
“This was taken on the 2nd day of filming for his Overprotected (Darkchild Remix) video,” he explained. “It was a (planned) 24-hour shooting day and we had a crew on the clock after 12 hours & a new clock coming in. At one point during the 2nd shift, Brit went missing and I went to her trailer to pick her up…only to find out her BF Justin had just broken up with her via text message. (Let me recommend to anyone reading this: don’t break up over text!)”
Chris said that the two of them “sat on the floor of his trailer for a minute, talked about it, and then got together. I told him he had to go out there & show Justin he made the biggest mistake of his life. That’s just one of the stories from this shoot…” Although she hasn’t shared too much of the story yet, she spoke to Page Six shortly before the release of Britney’s memoir to reveal the two words Justin texted her to end the three-year relationship: “It’s over.”
Chris explained how Britney was only 20 in February 2002 when the relationship ended. He was on the set of the “Overprotected: The Darkchild Remix” music video in downtown Los Angeles ready to “dominate” the two-day shoot, according to Chris.
“There are people where there’s something in them and you don’t know where it’s coming from — it’s like the ‘X’ factor. That’s what we saw with him,” he said. “I’m so happy that this person who is the biggest star in the world is everything I want him to be and more.”

Towards the end of the second day of filming, he recalled how he disappeared for about 20 to 40 minutes, which is “a long time” in the entertainment industry because it costs “20 grand to sit around.” He decided to check on her in his trailer and found her crying on the floor. She remembers him telling her, “I can’t believe it. Look at it. This is happening.” That’s when he showed her a text on his Motorola flip phone that read, “It’s over!!!”
Chris said that the “Mirror” comedian had been trying to contact her all day while she was filming because she was “furious” about her affair with Wade Robson, which Britney admitted to in her memoir. While Britney was understandably upset about the breakup, Chris recalled Britney’s longtime assistant and friend, Felicia Culotta, putting her arm around her shoulder and trying to comfort her.

Although Britney didn’t want to go ahead with filming at the time, Chris said he told her, “If you don’t have it in you, I totally understand … but if you want to go out there and do this final set up in the rain, you can show to him that he had just made the biggest mistake of his life.”
Chris said Britney replied, “You know that? That’s a good idea. I’m going to show him that he’s done the best thing he’s ever had.” The established director recalled how the Pop Princess filmed in the rain with more “confidence”, as if she was “on a mission.”
