Pop star Britney Spears has shared many details about her ex-boyfriend, Justin Timberlake, in her memoir, “The Woman In Me.”
While the 41-year-old pop star was candid about the alleged infidelity and unplanned pregnancy that rocked the relationship, she also touched on some lighter topics, such as their “tacky” matching denim outfits.

In “The Woman In Me” quote shared by Many people magazine, Britney reflected on the time she and Justin wore matching denim outfits to the 2001 American Music Awards.
In her memoir, she explains that the decision to double denim was partly inspired by her upbringing in the South, where “mom liked to get the kids together and say, ‘Listen, we’re going to church today, so we’re all going to color coordinate.'”
When she found out that the “Cry Me A River” singer was planning to wear denim to the awards show, she said, “We should match! Let’s do denim-on denim!”
That said, the “Oops!… I Did It Again” singer said that she only meant it as a joke and didn’t expect him to like the idea. “At first, honestly, I thought it was a joke,” he said. “I didn’t think my stylist would do it, and I never thought Justin would do it with me. But they both went all in.”
She said that stylist Steven Gerstein fitted the “Canadian tuxedo” outfit for the “Mirror” crooner, prompting Britney to think, “When she put it on, I thought, ‘Wow! I think we’re really doing this!'”

While the “Womanizer” singer recalled how they often color-coordinated outfits as a couple, she said, “But with matching denim, we blew it.” She recalls how “My corset was sucking me in so tight under my denim dress, I almost fell off” and now understands why so many have scoffed at the look over the years.
“I get that it’s tacky — but it’s also pretty cool in its own way, and I’m also glad to see it parodied as a Halloween costume,” she wrote, admitting, “I’ve heard Justin gets criticized for looking.”
“In one podcast where they teased him about it, he said, ‘You do a lot when you’re young and in love,'” he continued. “And that’s right. We’re giddy, and the clothes reflect that.”

In 2020, on the 20th anniversary of their AMA fashion statement, Steven Gerstein stared Jezebel in the face, saying, “It’s a no-brainer. Justin and Britney were dating at the time. We were in New Orleans when Britney and Justin said, ‘We’re making matching denim.’ And I was like, ‘How did you do it? Who did that?’”
“We ended up taking the Costume National suit that Justin wore for the Celebrity album cover. We remade it in denim. The conversation with Levi’s happened at the same time, and Britney was working with Kurt and Bart,” Gerstein said. “We had some cross-contacts at Levi’s, so it went from idea to made in a matter of days.”
“It’s like their prom,” Gerstein added. “They have an idea, and we do what they want instead of the other way around. The rest is history.”

“The Social Network” actor also reflected on the appearance in 2020 when he appeared on the Lance Bass podcast. He doubled down on his NSYNC bandmates, saying, “You can rock it one day” before he went on to admit, “You do a lot when you’re young and in love.”
As noted by People magazine, many celebrities have copied the look this year. At the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, “I Kissed A Girl” singer Katy Perry wore double-denim as she walked the red carpet. At the time, the “Roar” singer tweeted that her custom Versace dress was inspired by her “love of nostalgia and … Tumblr addiction.”
