In 2021, snake handler Michael Hano sat down for an interview with the TODAY show to mark the show’s 20th anniversary. He admitted that he “barely knew who Britney Spears was” at the time of the show. “I’m not really interested in pop culture and stuff like that. I mean, I’ve worked with some of the most famous models or people in the world and I didn’t know who they were until afterwards,” he explained.
“I had heard of him because you went to the supermarket back then, and you waited in the checkout line and they had all those tabloid magazines,” he continued. “This was before the internet really existed, so I knew that he was like a teen pop star or something, but like I said, I wouldn’t know any of his songs or anything.”

He said that it was “really good” working with Britney and admitted that he was “initially” scared of the giant snake when they started working together. “He was very focused and at first he was scared of the snake, but you could see that he was able to focus and push himself to be able to work with that thing and seem comfortable doing it,” he said.
He also explained that he initially had some trouble convincing producers to let him work with the pop star one-on-one to get more comfortable with the snake. “After a few little mistakes because these people are on television … sometimes they just don’t want to listen, then they realize that they better listen to the guy with the snake,” he said. “I finally had to be alone with him for a few minutes so he would understand. At one point, he said, ‘He’s not going to bite me, is he?’ And my answer is always, and my agent hates me for this, ‘Probably not.’”

“You’re crazy Britney Spears, you know, if this thing bites you, I think my career is over,” he told her. He revealed that the joke made him laugh and let him feel more comfortable working with him and the snake. This species can grow up to 200 pounds and up to 20 feet long.
“She realizes that I’m being completely honest with her, which is the route I love with this celebrity,” he added before recalling the training session with the snake where Britney continued to train even when it was time to take a break.

“This was on stage at the Metropolitan Opera House and when I first appeared, they made me sit in the audience while the band practiced their choreography,” he said. “I sat there for quite a while until they got ready for the snake to be brought in. All the dancers and Britney were rehearsing and even though the director said, ‘OK, take five,’ and everyone left the stage. to take a break, she kept rehearsing.”
“There’s no music playing and you can see him counting, you know, 2, 3, 4 or whatever, and practicing his own dance steps. I said, ‘Oh wow. Look at this. He is really a hard worker. Same thing with snakes. At first, he was scared and uncomfortable with it, but he forced himself with it and did very well, I have to say.”
