Britney Spears Says Her 2002 ‘Crossroads’ Role Was ‘Messed Up’

Pop star Britney Spears revisits her role in the 2002 film “Crossroads.”

The film is about three childhood friends: Lucy (Britney Spears), Kit (Zoë Saldana), and Mimi (Taryn Manning). After eight years apart, the three rediscover their friendship on a cross-country trip.

“Crossroads” originally premiered in 2002 and grossed $61 million worldwide despite negative reviews at the time. However, it has become a cult classic and returns to theaters for two days – October 23 and October 25 – for a global fan event focused on the release of her new memoir, “The Woman In Me.”

It seems the pop star had a hard time separating herself from her character in the 2002 film “Crossroads.” In an excerpt from her memoir “The Woman In Me” released Tuesday, People magazine revealed that it was confusing for her to separate herself from her character while “method acting” for that role.

“The experience was not easy for me. My problem was not with anyone involved in the production but with what acting did to my mind,” Britney wrote in her memoir. “I think I started acting Method — I just didn’t know how to get out of my character. I really became this other person. Some people do Method acting, but they are usually aware of the fact that they are doing it. But I don’t have any separation at all.”

“I ended up walking differently, carrying myself differently, talking differently. I was a different person for months while I was filming Crossroads. Still to this day, I’m convinced the girls I shot the movie with were thinking, She’s a little…strange. If they think so, they are right,” he continued.

Once she finished her role in “Crossroads,” the pop star decided she didn’t want to continue acting anymore. Instead, he decided to focus on his burgeoning music career, describing acting as a “hazardous job” that he had no interest in pursuing.

“That was the beginning and the end of my acting career, and I was relieved,” he wrote. “I imagine there are people in acting who have dealt with that sort of thing, where they have trouble separating themselves from the character.”

“I hope I never approach the dangers of that job again. Living that way, being half self and half fictional character, is a mess. After a while you don’t know what’s real anymore,” he added.

“Britney was really interesting to watch, and Shonda showed us her early expertise in writing complex female characters,” Davis said. “We had the best time in the world making this picture and the connection the actors brought to their performances in every frame.
