Brittney Griner’s appeal has been rejected and it looks like she will spend all 9 years of her sentence in a Russian prison.
Brittney Griner’s Sentence Upheld

The 32-year-old lost whatever hope he had today after his appeal was rejected. Griner appears to be holding a video conference from inside his jail cell. He moved as much as he could in the small cell, often sitting and standing up nervously.
Griner looked stoic with no expression on his face. He and his team had hoped that this was for Griner and that the next time they saw him he might go home on his own. That clearly didn’t happen and now the legal team is going back to the drawing board to see what other options they might have if any after this.
Brittney Griner’s Punishment Was Cruel

The professional WNBA player was arrested in Russia in February 2022 for having marijuana oil in her luggage while traveling from New York to Moscow. He was formally sentenced to nine years in prison in August after a week-long trial.
His lawyers immediately filed an appeal stating that the sentence was too harsh for the crime while they were quite aware that the appeal would probably be rejected it was still a blow to the morale of the lawyers and especially Griner.
Griner initially pleaded guilty to the charge of bringing hashish oil into the country, but he insisted that it was not intentional.
President Joe Biden Has Tried to Help

Russia doesn’t seem willing to let WNBA players go no matter what. President Biden is trying to negotiate with Russia to lure them with a prisoner exchange. In exchange for Viktor Bout, a Russian prisoner serving 25 years in an American prison for arms smuggling, they wanted back Griner and American prisoner Paul Whelan.
The outcome of this deal was clearly not good as Griner was still sitting in a Russian prison looking downtrodden and hopeless. One thing Griner relies on is his wife’s support. Cherelle Griner is hopeful about her wife’s incarceration, and her fight to get justice for Brittney.

Chernelle wrote a post on Instagram detailing her love and admiration for her wife. “We love you baby! People say ‘busy.’ However, there is no job in this world that can stop any of us from wondering if you are safe,” he wrote.
“My heart, our hearts, all beat faster every day that passes without hearing from you. I miss your voice. I miss your presence. You are our people! There are no words to express this pain. I’m sick, we’re sick. We are waiting for the day to love you as a family.”
Hopefully, Biden can use some of that charm and get Griner back on US soil.
