Bryan Kohberger murder trial may be pushed to 2025 as judge denies motion to toss charges

Bryan Kohberger’s trial could be pushed back to the summer of 2025 as the judge presiding over the case denied another attempt by the University of Idaho murder suspect to have his charges dismissed.

Kohberger, 29, was clearly visible in the live broadcast for the first time on Friday. The alleged killer was seen wearing a suit with a tie and white shirt as he sat next to his lawyer Anne Taylor.

The criminology student has been charged in the deaths of Madison Mogen, 21, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20, in their off-campus home – which has since been demolished – in November 2022.

The state’s attorney wants to begin the trial of the alleged killer as soon as this summer to avoid the school year and stop forcing victims’ families to relive the pain of losing their children.

However, Taylor said he did not believe they could be ready by this summer and wanted to push it back to Summer 2025, as well as asking for a change of venue.

Taylor also said he believed the trial could last up to 15 weeks.

The lawyer also said he wanted to make clear his defense team was not “sitting around” to avoid being prepared.

“We’re not sitting and waiting,” Taylor told the judge.

However, Judge John Judge said he was “concerned about the delay.”

“This is a complicated case, this could take a long time – longer than we think – and I think this will add additional delays,” he told the audience.

“Do we need another year?” he questioned after Taylor’s lengthy explanation of why it took them another year and a half to do so, including going through 51 terabytes of data.

Taylor said the earliest he might be ready is March 2025.

“I’m nervous to tell you I’ll be ready by the summer of 2025,” he said.

The state’s attorney said if the trial cannot begin this summer, it would prefer the summer of 2025 to avoid the school year.

The first hearing, which was closed to the public, reportedly dealt with his team’s motion to dismiss the grand jury indictment because there were “errors” in the jury instructions. The judge denied the motion.

The Attorney General is worried about prolonging the pain of the victims’ families by pushing the trial until 2025. Additionally, Judge John Judge said he was “concerned about the delay.”

Kohberger’s defense team has long argued that the allegations lack sufficient evidence. Their previous attempts to throw out the case were also denied.

“This is not our attempt to achieve delay, this is our attempt to achieve due process,” his defense team said on Friday.

The team of criminology students has been accused of filing endless motions to prolong the trial.

“The trial in this case will take place,” said a state attorney. “We need to go to trial in this case.”
