During the round table discussion at The Wrap’s Power of Women summit in Los Angeles, Gellar opened up about her time acting in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” revealing that it has “a very toxic male cast.”
The actor, 45, discussed the frequent displays of cheating and misogynistic behavior on set, adding that he thinks that’s how it is on all sets.
“For a long time, I was on a set that I think was known as a very toxic male set, and so it was ingrained in my head that that’s what all sets were like, and that women were pitted against each other – that if women were friends, then we become too powerful, so you have to hold it back,” Gellar said.
He also pointed out that, despite the aforementioned, surrounding himself with supportive men and women throughout his 40-year career was very important.
“Now that I have the opportunity to work with more women and men who support women as well, I realize how easy the experience is, but … unfortunately we are still in a place where all those departments many times have to be women for us to speak up,” she said.

Although Gellar did not name “Buffy” showrunner Joss Whedon in her statement, the filmmaker has been accused of toxic behavior in the past.
In 2021, Gellar’s “Buffy” co-star, Charisma Carpenter, accused Whedon of “toxic” and “hostile” behavior, saying that he “abused his power numerous times while working on the set of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer'” and its sequel, “Angel .”
Amber Benson, who stars as Tara Maclay on the show, as well tweeted“Buffy is a toxic environment and it starts at the top. [Charisma Carpenter]
tell the truth and I support it 100%. There was a lot of damage done back then, and many of us are still processing it twenty years later.”
Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Dawn Summers in “Buffy” also hurled accusations at the filmmakers, claiming she engaged in “inappropriate behavior” when she worked on set as a young girl.

According to a report by New York TimesGellar revealed that she has participated in such toxic behavior in the past, although the actress did not go further to explain.
While answering a question about her experiences as a teenager in the industry, the actress insisted that her early days were tough, adding that “there were no great female roles when I came up.”
She said her role was limited to “girlfriend” and “wife” roles, noting that “Buffy” was great because she had something to do.
Speaking about breaking into the industry as a young girl, the Teen Choice Award winner said, “Growing up in New York, I had a little bit of street taste going into it, which helped a lot. But no, it’s not easy. And I’ve had my fair share of experiences, I just chose not to — I didn’t win by telling my story, emotionally, for me. I saw people telling their stories, and I was so impressed. But in this world where people are divided, and victim blaming and shaming, I’m just keeping my story here.”
Gellar Shows Support For Victims Of Abuse

In an Instagram post, the actress offered support to people who have experienced and survived abuse.
She said, “While I’m proud to have my name associated with Buffy Summers, I don’t want to forever be associated with Joss Whedon’s name … I stand with all victims of abuse and am proud of them for speaking up.”
Joss Whedon has since addressed the abuse allegations, stating that he did nothing wrong. In an interview with New York Magazine (via NYP), the director responded to allegations that he grabbed the costume designer’s hand by saying, “I know I’m going to get mad, but I’ve never been physical with people.”
