San Diego authorities sniffed out this bike thief.
A bike thief who was caught on camera last month petting the family’s golden retriever before he fled their home on a “different” two-wheeler was recently arrested, San Diego police said.
An unidentified 42-year-old man was arrested in the theft of a black Electra 3-speed bicycle valued at $1,300 from the garage of a home around 10:40 p.m. on July 15, according to authorities.
While his crime was in progress, he was seen petting the homeowner’s dog in footage that went viral earlier this month.
“PAW-SITIF NEWS, San Diego!” the city’s police department wrote in a Facebook post Sunday. “Thanks to invaluable anonymous tips and the hard work of North Division Investigations, a 42-year-old man from San Diego was arrested in connection with the theft of a bicycle from a garage in [Pacific Beach] last month.”
The bike was returned to its owner and “much to the delight of Ace, a very good boy,” San Diego police said. “This success underscores the power of community collaboration.”

The man showed he had no heart, at least towards innocent animals, when he started petting the family dog that came into the garage as he was about to take off on his bike, according to footage.
The thief put the kickstand on the bike, and started rubbing the puppy’s belly and praising the sweet canine.
“You’re the greatest dog I’ve ever known,” she is heard telling the pet. “I love you too. You’re my sweetheart.”
The man then asks where the dog’s “daddy” is, as if to say the owner can’t leave the garage open.

The dog licked the suspect’s face as the man again told the pet, “I love you too.”
“How do you have all this stuff,” he asked rhetorically before taking off on the bike.
Authorities at the time said the bike had a “distinctive” design that included “8-ball” covers on the tire valves, an “8-ball” logo on the frame and a rear wheel frame marked with a checkered black and white pattern.
