California beaches slammed by massive waves, coastal flooding

Another round of dangerous waves and coastal flooding Saturday forced several authorities in Southern California to warn of potential beach evacuations, just 48 hours after massive waves wreaked havoc along the coast from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

A series of storm systems in the Pacific Ocean helped trigger rough seas that created life-threatening waves in five western states.

Local emergency management agencies and National Weather Service offices appeared to be well prepared for the event, as beaches and piers up and down the Golden State coast were closed in preparation for coastal impacts.

Around the coast of San Francisco, Monterey and Big Sur, dangerously large waves of 28-33 feet are expected, while waves of 15-20 feet with sets up to 25 feet are expected around Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo.

Ventura County warned Saturday of possible evacuations, but water levels never reached the threshold for an evacuation order to be issued.

Southern California was still cleaning up from high waves on Thursday.

A large wave crashed and overcame the beach barrier, sending waves of water inland and shocking some onlookers.

Video from the chaotic scene showed people scrambling to escape the waves with at least one car being swept into the floodwaters.

At least eight people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.

Ventura County spent hours Thursday and Friday night creating a fresh mile-long sand barrier to help protect the shoreline from advancing waves.

The wave threat is forecast to ease Sunday into the early work week as the eastern Pacific takes a break from a deep low-pressure storm.
