A deranged California father is accused of beating and stabbing his two young sons to death in a brutal attack that Los Angeles County prosecutors called a “stunning act of brutality.”
Prospero Serna, 38, faces murder and assault charges for attacking his four children during a violent incident at their Lancaster home late Saturday night, prosecutors said in a statement.
Two of the children — identified by ABC-News as Ziasia Serna, 7, and Najila, 3 — were killed in the attack. Two others were found hiding inside the house.
“We don’t know where exactly the attack happened, but they were all found in one bedroom,” said Lt. Daniel Vizcarra of the LA County Sheriff’s Department.
“It was very difficult,” Vizcarra said. “This is traumatizing for everyone involved. All responding deputies, all parties involved, investigators. Everyone.”
Police responded to the scene just before midnight after the child’s mother called 911 during the horrific attack — with Serna taken into custody a few blocks away after a violent struggle with a sheriff’s deputy.

“Two young lives were taken suddenly in a stunningly brutal act,” LA County District Attorney Gascón said in a statement released Wednesday. “This is a heartbreaking tragedy that has shaken our community to its core.
“Our hearts ache for the innocent lives lost and those who have to live the rest of their lives living a nightmare,” he added. “The loss of these young souls is a stark reminder of the urgent need to protect the most vulnerable among us.”

Prosecutors said Serna was charged with two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, two counts of assault on a child under the age of eight, and one count of child abuse.
He was arraigned and ordered held without bail pending a return to court.
