California’s Gavin Newsom shut down speculation he would challenge President Biden in the 2024 presidential race, saying Democrats should “move on” from the issue of the octogenarian commander-in-chief’s age.
“President Biden is going to run,” Newsom told NBC’s “Meet the Press” in a teaser clip that aired Friday.
“I think there has been so much wallowing in the last few months and handwriting in this regard. But we are preparing for the campaign. We look forward to it.”
Newsom, 55, said his advice to donors worried about the 81-year-old Democratic incumbent’s prospects next year is “time to move on.”
Asked if Vice President Kamala Harris, 58, is a capable successor should Biden choose to step down, he also added, “It’s a Biden-Harris administration.”

The Golden State governor sparked speculation about his own presidential run earlier this year after appearing for an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity and challenging Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to debate their state’s differing policies.
“Maybe I’m a little old-fashioned about presidents and vice presidents,” he said. “I’m a lieutenant governor, so I’m a little subjective.”
Newsom touted a “very close working relationship” with Harris during his tenures as San Francisco district attorney, California attorney general and as a US senator.

“We knew each other before we were both in politics. The day I was sworn in as mayor, walking across the street, he was sworn in as district attorney,” he said.
“So you can’t imagine having to compete with each other?” host Chuck Todd asked.
“Of course not. By definition, never will,” Newsom responded. “But I’ve said it a thousand times. We personally continue to maintain a very good relationship.”

“He’s not mad that you’re going to argue with Ron DeSantis?” Todd pressed.
“It looks like someone in his office is because I read some quotes off the record,” Newsom said. “I wish I knew who it was. But I didn’t hear it from him, so, and I certainly didn’t hear it from the White House itself.”

“Florida has become the number one state for net in-migration. We have the number one economy, number one right now in education, crime rate at a 50-year low,” the Florida governor told Fox News in August.
“But in other words, this is a debate for the future of our country, because you have people like Joe Biden [who] want to see Californication of the United States.”
DeSantis also hinted during his interview that Newsom and Harris were both stalking the Oval Office.
A Wall Street Journal poll this week showed 73% of registered voters — and two-thirds of Democrats — believe Biden is too old to serve a second term.

The president also trailed nearly every Republican candidate in the general election race, except entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, according to a CNN survey of US adults. He bonded with DeSantis.
The Florida governor was a distant second to GOP front-runner and former President Donald Trump, 77, who led the field with 52.7% support, according to a RealClearPolitics polling average. Only 14.2% supported DeSantis.
The Newsom-DeSantis debate is expected to take place in November in battleground states such as Nevada, Georgia or North Carolina, an aide to the California governor told Politico in August.
