A California mother accused of strangling her four-year-old daughter may have been driving with the girl’s body in her car for days, investigators reportedly believe.
Police found Mia Gonzalez strangled and unresponsive in a car with her mother on Thursday on Civic Center Way in East Los Angeles, and charged 38-year-old Maria Avalos with the brutal crime, according to KABC-TV.
The slain girl’s father told the station that Avalos was having problems and had driven away with Mia earlier last week.
Police told the family that the suspect may have been driving with the child’s body for several days before he was arrested for murder, according to local allies.
“Mia is a very good child,” her godmother Noemi Lopez told the station.
“He is the light of my house. He doesn’t deserve this.”
“We’re trying to contact him,” Lopez reportedly said of Avalos.

“He didn’t answer for two days. He said he needed space, which he experienced a lot.”
“She should have asked for help,” added the grieving godmother. “He should have called me. Now he is trying to call me from jail. What does he want now? He has done his part, now let me do mine.”
Mia’s cause of death was “a combination of strangulation and blunt force trauma,” authorities said.
The case is set to be presented to the Los Angeles County prosecutor on Tuesday.
