California mom Sherri Papini, who faked her kidnapping, released from prison

California mother Sherri Papini – who was sentenced to 18 months in prison for faking her own kidnapping – has reportedly been released from prison.

The 41-year-old mother of two will live in one of the state’s Office of Reentry-Housing Management halfway house locations, according to the Sacramento Bee.

Officials said Papini’s ex-boyfriend helped her flee her home in Redding to hide out in Costa Mesa – 600 miles south of her home – for three weeks.

Papini’s husband and friends raised concerns after she disappeared, garnering national attention.

Prosecutors said Papini began planning the kidnapping scam with his ex around December 2015 and ordered him to get a prepaid cell phone. On November 2, 2016, Papini texted Reyes and told him to pick her up.

He reappeared three weeks later on Thanksgiving near Woodland, wearing chains around his waist and arms. He told police two Hispanic women kidnapped him at gunpoint.

Her lie will crumble after investigators find her DNA on a piece of clothing that will lead back to her ex-boyfriend, who dropped her off at Woodland when he decided to show up again.

He later pleaded guilty to mail fraud and making false statements. She received more than $30,000 from the California Victims Compensation Board, as well as $49,000 from GoFundMe, and $127,567.50 from social security disability payments.

After he resurfaced, Alegria said Papini applied for and used funds from the California Victims Compensation Board to buy new shutters for his home and pay for other costs, including therapy for his alleged anxiety and PTSD.

A judge ordered him to pay $309,902.23 in restitution.

Papini was arrested in March 2022, more than five years after his disappearance.

He will be fully released on October 26 this year.
