California ‘monster’ nanny sentenced to 707 years in prison for molesting 16 boys

The California babysitter said he was “proud of himself” for bringing smiles to sexually assaulted children before being sentenced to more than 700 years in prison on Friday.

Matthew Zakrzewski, 34, was found guilty of 34 felony counts including lewd and lascivious acts with children under 14 for his malicious abuse of children including molesting 16 boys believed to be in his care, and showing pornography to a 17th person, The Orange County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Zakrzewski committed his horrific crimes over three years between Jan. 2014, until May 2019. The young victims were between 2 and 12 years old.

“I’m proud to put a smile on your children and all the good times we shared were 100 percent genuine,” Zakrzewski said before Orange County Superior Court Judge Kimberly Menninger read his fate.

Several family members of abused children called Zakrzewski the “master manipulator” during victim impact statements.

“The death penalty is too good for him… Please show no mercy to this animal,” said a grandmother of two victims, according to ABC 7.

Other parents said they felt guilty for hiring the “monster” to watch their children.

“I will deal with guilt for the rest of my life for allowing this animal in my life,” said one mother. “I hired a nanny once in my life. Only once in my life.”

“He came to our house once a month for a year,” said a mother whose 2-year-old son was Zakrzewski’s victim. “One of the first things she taught him was to keep secrets.”

The district attorney called the case a loss of innocence and childhood of the 17 children.

“This is a case of shattered innocence and a precious childhood that was robbed from 17 little boys,” said Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer. “These children will never know the people they want – because their childhood is suddenly and inexplicably interrupted not by a wolf at the door, but by a predator masquerading as a gift.”

He was found guilty of 34 felony charges in October, at which time he faced a maximum prison sentence of 690 years to life plus eight years.

In her closing remarks during the trial, prosecutor Juliet Oliver revealed Zakrzewski had “an entire book” on pedophilia on his computer, and had recorded much of the evidence used against him.

He was only arrested after one of the child’s parents reported him to the police for touching his eight-year-old son inappropriately and sharing concerns about other children in early May 2019.

The Laguna Beach Police Department’s Major Crimes & Intelligence Unit opened an investigation into Zakrzewski and found a second seven-year-old victim in Los Angeles and 10 other boys throughout Southern California.

He was arrested on May 17, 2019, at a local airport after disembarking an international flight.

After initially filing five felony charges against Zakrzewski, investigators asked the public to help identify other potential victims through video evidence and tips that resulted in additional charges.
