California woman goes missing on cross-county road trip; seen in police bodycam 2 days before last known sighting

A California woman went missing on a road trip with her pet bearded dragon and appeared distraught when she was last seen, according to police body camera footage of the encounter.

Chelsea Grimm, 32, was reported missing by her parents on Oct. 4 when they were unable to contact her after she told them she planned to go camping in Arizona and may not have phone service, AZ Family reported.

He was last seen camping in his car on September 30 by a logger near Ashfork, Arizona.

Grimm’s abandoned car was found with a flat tire on the side of the road on Oct. 5. Her belongings and her pet dragon were missing from the locked Ford Focus SUV and her phone and credit card activity had stopped, according to local outlets.

“We are trying our best to maintain a positive outcome scenario and put our faith in the authorities,” his father, Stephen Grimm, told the publication.

Just two days before his last sighting, Grimm interacted with a police officer in Williams, Arizona who checked on him after receiving a call about a suspicious vehicle near a cemetery and war memorial.

The meeting on September 28 was recorded by a camera worn by police and was recently released in the hope of helping the missing persons investigation.

“Yeah, I just did a missing soldier shoot and got a little emotional, so I cried before I got back on the road,” he said from the driver’s seat.

The police asked Grimm if he had a hotel for the night.

“I’m not, I’m actually thinking about camping for the night, but I’m not sure yet. I don’t plan on being here until sunset,” he told her.

“A yellow light up there, Loves? It’s a truck stop. In the gas station area, you can sleep there. No one will bother you,” said the officer.

“Oh perfect. Great. Yeah, like that,” Grimm replied.

The Grimms have hired a private investigator to help local authorities investigate their daughter’s disappearance.

“It’s a nightmare and it’s one you could never imagine yourself and would never wish on anyone,” her father, Stephen Grimm, told the Law&Crime Network Monday.

“But having said that, we’re going to hang in there. We cling to hope. Putting our trust in law enforcement professionals. We have also hired a private investigator, which hopefully will help.”

Coconino County Sheriff’s Office investigators say they don’t expect foul play at this time after finding Grimm’s locked car. His family was hoping he got a ride when he got two flat tires.

“The car was locked,” the missing woman’s mother Janet Grimm told Law&Crime. “It’s neat. So there were no visual signs of a struggle. And, it is possible that he has just decided that he will continue his camp.”

Her parents said Grimm planned to drive across the country for the wedding in Connecticut after she found out she couldn’t bring her bearded dragon on the plane. However, after only reaching Arizona after several days of driving, Grimm decided his plans were too ambitious and he would have to skip the wedding.

He instead decided to camp in Arizona and then return to California, according to his parents.

But for the past few days when Grimm has been seen or heard from, he has appeared “uneven,” his father told Law&Crime.

“She was disappointed in the man she was dating; he was afraid of him,” said Stephen Grimm. “We feel like he got away from it. And I think overall, that influenced a lot of his thinking.”
