Alves revealed during an appearance on the “Southern Living’s Biscuits & Jam” podcast that McConaughey’s mother had caused him a hard time in their relationship when he first “pictured”.
“He was doing all these things when I first came into the picture, wasn’t he? He really tested me,” said Alves. “I mean, really testing me.”
“He would call me all the names of Matthew’s ex-girlfriends, he would start speaking Spanish to me in a very broken way, sort of put [me] down a little. I mean, all kinds of stuff,” he added.

“All the way there, all the plane ride to Istanbul, he told me all these stories and put all these things in my head,” shared Alves. “So I just flipped it on her and brought out my spicy, Latin Brazilian side, and I let her have it.”
She added, “So I went back to him, and we had it back and forth, back and forth. And then at the end, he just looked at me and he was like, ‘OK. Now you’re in.'”

Alves went on to reveal that he and McConaughey’s mother now have a close and supportive relationship—a bond that wasn’t always as strong. She noted that all the 91-year-old’s parents wanted when she challenged their relationship was for her to “fight back.”
“What he wanted was for me to fight back,” he said. “And then from that day, that night, we had the most amazing relationship, and I have so much respect for that. He has a lot of respect for me.”
