Car filled with explosives barrels into crowd leaving Rochester rock concert, killing two in possible domestic terrorism: police

A couple was killed and several others injured just hours before New Year’s when a car packed with explosives plowed into a group of people leaving a rock concert in upstate New York, police said.

The fiery crash happened at 12:50 a.m. outside the Kodak Center in Rochester, where about 1,000 people filed out after a New Year’s Eve moe. show

Rochester officers were helping pedestrians cross the street when a Ford Expedition sped toward the crowd, but instead crashed into an Uber pulling out of a nearby parking lot, law enforcement sources said.

“The force of the crash caused the two vehicles to go through a group of pedestrians at the intersection and then into two other vehicles,” said Police Chief David Smith at a press conference.

The cars burst into flames that took nearly an hour for firefighters to put out.

A couple riding in an Uber died, while their driver was rushed to hospital in non-life-threatening conditions, sources and police said.

Three pedestrians were hit by the flying car – one of whom was left clinging to life.

The driver who tried to cut off the crowd was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

He died from his injuries around 8 p.m. Monday and was identified as Michael Avery, law enforcement sources told The Post.

After the fire was extinguished, investigators found at least a dozen gasoline cans scattered on the pavement and inside the Expedition, according to Smith.

The incident is being investigated as possible domestic violence.

Avery, of Syracuse, had rented a hotel room in Rochester, where police conducted a search and found a suicide note and journal, according to law enforcement sources.

Investigators are reviewing journals for any clues about the attack and have interviewed family members who say they believe the suspect suffers from bipolar depression, although he has never been formally diagnosed, the source said.

Authorities plan to search Avery’s storage unit north of Syracuse as well.

The homicide driver rented the larger SUV before heading to the concert venue, law enforcement sources told ABC News.

“Of course I want to stand on this podium to say Happy New Year and smile and say good news. But unfortunately today we don’t get good news because we have some individuals whose family lives are changed because they won’t be here to bring in 2024,” said Mayor Malik Evans.

Members of moe., a Buffalo-based rock group that had played at the venue before the incident, said they were in “deep shock and sadness.”

It was the second night in a row the band played the Kodak Center to ring in the New Year.

“On a night meant for celebration and togetherness, instead we are faced with a tragedy that is contrary to understanding,” moe. said in a statement.

“Take care of yourselves and each other, as we navigate this time together.”
