Carlos started his career with Independiente del Valle and eventually moved to Ecuadorian team Barcelona SC. In the pre-season, he went to Arfian Selatan for a trial with VfB Stuttgart. On 30 January 2014, he signed a four-year deal with Stuttgart. On 28 November 2014, he scored his first goal for the club against Freiburg in a 4–1 win. He joined FC Dallas on 23 January 2016, before returning to Germany on 2 July 2019, and signed a five-year contract with FC Augsburg.
He was selected for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2011 and the South American Youth Championship in 2013. He made his national football team debut against the Netherlands in the 2014 FIFA World Cup on 17 May 2014. He has made 40 Caps in all for his nation.
