Actress Carrie Fisher will appear on the big screen seven years after she died in December 2016 at the age of 60.
The “Star Wars” actress, best known for her role as Princess Leia in a galaxy far, far away, suffered a heart attack on a flight from London to Los Angeles just before Christmas. His mother, “Singin’ In The Rain” actress Debbie Reynolds, died days later of a stroke during funeral planning.
Although it’s been seven years, Fisher’s last film, “Wonderwell,” will finally hit theaters this summer.

On Wednesday, Deadline reported that Vertical has acquired the rights to distribute Carrie Fisher’s final film, “Wonderwell,” which also stars Rita Ora, Nell Tiger Free, Sebastian Croft, and Kiera Milward. The film will hit theaters in North America, the United Kingdom, and Ireland this summer.
Fisher had completed filming his scenes for the film just weeks before his sudden death. Vertical is planning a limited theatrical release for “Wonderwell” through AMC Theatres. Shortly after, it will be released digitally on Friday, June 23.
“Wonderwell” director Vlad Marsavin told Deadline that the production has faced setback after setback. After Fisher’s unexpected death, the entertainment industry was rocked by the shutdown of the COVID-19 pandemic, which delayed already troubled productions.

“Now is the perfect time to share [Fisher’s] magical moments on screen as Hazel,” Marsavin told the outlet, noting that the film will include a dedication to the late actress.
“Carrie was full of energy on set and even celebrated her 60th birthday with us in Italy where we shot the movie,” he explained. “After the night shoot, which lasted until 2am, he invited the whole team to celebrate and the party was eventually shut down by the police because it was deemed too noisy. His departure was very emotional for the whole team.”
“Wonderwell” actress Rita Ora told the outlet that “working with Carrie Fisher was one of those experiences you never forget.”

“Wonderwell” is about a girl named Violet (Kiera Milward) who is taken to a “mysterious portal” near a medieval Italian village by Hazel, played by Carrie Fisher. Hazel offers a glimpse of Violet’s future after Violet and her family travel to a small village for a modeling opportunity for her sister.
Lee Rudnicki, the film’s producer, published a blog post in July 2021 to describe seeing Carrie Fisher’s final scene after she attended a screening of the film in Rome. She said that her final scene “took my breath away” and did not receive enough positive praise for the late actress.

“In fact, if you’re an actor, and you know with 100% certainty that this is your last day on Earth, this is the scene you might create to say goodbye to your fans,” Rudnicki wrote at the time. “Carrie’s last line is about life itself — I won’t spoil it here, but it’s genius, if not heartbreaking.
He later said that the scene gave him “the kind of goosebumps I’ve never experienced in my life,” adding, “That scene was golden, a magical final curtain call for a very special actor and woman who left this Earth too soon.”

His daughter Billie Lourd accepted the star on his behalf. Fisher’s “Star Wars” actor Mark Hamill, best known as Luke Skywalker in the franchise, also gave an emotional speech on his behalf.
