Cat saves dog’s life by chasing off coyotes — see the amazing video of the rescue

A Havanese puppy in Edmond, North Dakota, owes his life to the family cat — who chased two coyotes mid-attack on Dec. 1.

The dramatic rescue was captured by the family’s outdoor surveillance camera.

Lane Dyer, the homeowner, shared the incredible footage and story with Fox News Digital.

On the night of the incident, Dyer said she had just let the family’s small dog, Oakley, outside to go about her business while she took care of two other dogs inside the house.

The dog was outside only a moment when the family heard the commotion.

“Oakley ran into the house and ran upstairs,” Dyer said during a phone interview with Fox News Digital.

“He had been cut in the chest and side and was bleeding profusely.”

Dyer’s wife bandaged Oakley, applied pressure to the wound and took him to an emergency vet.

“We don’t know what happened,” he said.

On the way to the vet, they pull up security footage and are shocked to see the attack — along with a brave act by their cat, Binx.

“He knew exactly what was going on – without hesitation, he acted,” Dyer said.

“And as soon as he fell to the ground, he made a lot of noise, hissing – and pounced on the coyote.”

He added, “Never in a million years would I have expected a cat to do that.”

Binx is a stray cat who started visiting the Dyers’ yard when he was just a few weeks old.

The family started feeding him and he was hooked.

“We’ve tried to bring him in, but he’s not interested in being an indoor cat,” Dyer said.

“He loves the elements, and I’m sure he’s been in a lot of situations where he’s had to defend himself. He lives behind our house.”

This is the first time a coyote has attacked a pet in the neighborhood, the family said.

“We sometimes hear them howling in the evening, but never that close,” Dyer said.

After being treated and receiving stitches, Oakley made a full recovery and is healthy.

With this experience now behind them, Dyer advises other pet owners to “not take coyotes lightly” and consider them potential predators.

“They hunt and prey on small targets and have the ability to attack without warning,” he warned.
