Cause of death of family found dead in $5 million Massachusetts mansion revealed

Authorities have revealed how a family of three died in their $5 million Massachusetts mansion Thursday night without signs of a break-in.

Investigators have determined that the tragedy that claimed the lives of Rakesh and Teena Kamal and their teenage daughter Arianna was a murder-suicide, the Norfolk District Attorney’s office announced Tuesday.

Rakesh Kamal, 57, is believed to have fatally shot his 54-year-old wife Teena and 18-year-old daughter Arianna before turning the gun on himself inside their spacious Dover home, prosecutors said, according to NBC-Boston.

A .40-caliber Glock 22, which was not registered to Rakesh, was found at the scene, officials said.

District Attorney Michael Morrissey previously described their deaths as a “domestic violence situation” and said there was no evidence of outside involvement because a gun was found near the husband’s body.

But prosecutors are not calling the tragedy a murder-suicide – instead confirming that all three were shot – until the medical examiner conducts an autopsy.

Rakesh Kamal’s .40-caliber Glock 22 that was shot did not belong to him, although the gun was found at the scene, officials said. RickKamal/X Rakesh Kamal is believed to have shot dead his 54-year-old wife Teena and 18-year-old daughter Arianna before killing himself. Blogwithmom.com

A relative made the grim discovery when they stopped by the 11-bed, 13-bathroom home on the Thursday after Christmas to check on the family after failing to contact any of them. The mansion – estimated to be worth $5.45 million – was still lit with Christmas lights when a police car blocked its entrance the next day.

The couple’s daughter, a freshman studying neuroscience at Middlebury College in Vermont, was home for winter break at the time of her murder.

Kamal’s family was struggling financially before the murder-suicide, according to records reviewed by The Post.

Their mansion, a 19,000-square-foot ranch, was foreclosed on a year ago and was sold to Massachusetts-based Wilsondale Associates LLC for $3 million, according to real estate records.

The family bought the home in 2019 for $4 million, records show.

Teena — who previously ran an education systems company called EduNova with her husband — also filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy in September 2022, listing between $1 million and $10 million in liabilities, according to the filing. The case was however dismissed two months later due to insufficient documents.

EduNova was launched in 2016 but was dissolved in December 2021, according to state records.

The family had no prior reports involving domestic issues, according to Morrissey.

“This is very unfortunate and we offer our condolences to the entire Kamal family for this terrible tragedy,” he said at the initial media briefing.

“I hate to see that at any time,” Morrissey added of the domestic violence incident. “I think some of the tension that people feel in relationships often comes up during the holidays.”
