CBS anchor admits he could not find a single person outside of New Hampshire grocery store who feels ‘good about the economy’

Fox News

“CBS Mornings” co-host Tony Dokoupil reported how he and his team couldn’t find anyone outside New Hampshire grocery stores who “felt good about the economy.”

During a preview of an upcoming CBS News segment that will air on Sunday, Dokoupil mentioned how people are complaining about higher food prices, despite macro signs that the economy is improving.

The co-host made the claim as President Biden continues to try and sell his economic achievements — aka “Bidenomics” — ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

Speaking to local CBS New Hampshire anchor Dokoupil reported, “People are really upset about the economy here in New Hampshire. Even though overall the big picture numbers are going in the right direction, and even though people’s own personal experiences are generally going well, there is much gloom.”

Realizing the reason, he said, “For example, the price of food in general has increased. And we talked to a bunch of people outside a grocery store in Derry, New Hampshire — we couldn’t find anyone who was happy about the economy.”

The adviser noted that the negative view is “just human nature,” adding, “Psychologically, you go to the store, if you pay more for the stuff you get every week, it really sticks with you, it’s really annoying you, it brings you down. People are upset about it.”

He realizes that the locals are still alive, that they “succeed” despite the higher prices, even if they regret it.

“Yes, they succeeded. But are they bothered by the fact that frozen OJ is up double digits and steak on Friday is up double digits? exactly. And that really drives people’s perspective on things,” he declared.

Dokoupil’s comments previewed Sunday’s “CBS Evening News” broadcast that featured footage of him talking to some of these locals.

In an interview, Dokoupil spoke to a local woman and tried to convince her with the fact that the government had lowered the inflation rate. The woman laughed at the host and shook her head, replying, “I don’t know what kind of pocketbook they’re looking at, but it’s not mine.”

He also added he had to take a second job.

Dokoupil also spoke to other families, who explained to him that almost every member worked so that the family could make ends meet. A young man in the family said, “There are six of us in the house. The five of us work. You know, it’s like, if you go back, like, 30 years, two incomes will cover all our expenses, maybe.
