Veteran rock and roll singer Jerry Lee Lewis died at the age of 87 on Friday, October 28.
Lewis’ death was officially confirmed in a statement after reports of his death began circulating on the internet earlier this week.
The 87-year-old, known as one of the pioneering rock and roll musicians after rising to fame in the late 1950s, died at his home in Mississippi of natural causes. He is survived by his wife, who was with him at the time of his death.
The official announcement of his death reported Lewis had “no fear” of death. He also reportedly told his wife “he welcomes the afterlife.” (via CNN)

Lewis’ career has arguably been overshadowed by his personal life at times, but several famous rock and roll musicians and other famous faces have expressed their gratitude for Lewis’ contribution to rock and roll.
Stephen King tweeted “RIP Jerry Lee Lewis. The Killer is gone. He can play that piano, boy. Think I’ll have to play me ‘Lewis Boogie.”
Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards shared a video on Twitter of the duo performing “A Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” in 1983. He wrote, ‘Goodbye to the Killer’ RIP” in his tribute.
Richards’ bandmate, Mick Jagger also browse Twitter to pay respect. He included a photo of him and Lewis from the 1970s.
“God bless you Jerry Lee,” he wrote, “Your songs light up my life!”
Elton John also included a photo with his tribute.
He write, “Without Jerry Lee Lewis, I would not be who I am today. He’s great and interesting, and he smashes the piano. Excellent singer too. Thanks for all your great inspiration and all the rock ‘n’ roll memories.”
John’s longtime songwriter friend Bernie Taupin posted a black-and-white photo of Lewis on Instagram.
Taupin wrote, “The last man standing is gone. @jerryleelewisthekiller was the first in the boiler room and the undisputed king of redneck rock & roll, the last of the 50’s new class upstarts. What a life, legacy, music!” He was a bluesy thunderer whose piano playing inspired non-guitarists to tear up the piano.”
Reports of Lewis’ Death Began to Circulate Earlier This Week
Lewis was previously believed to have died earlier this week.
According to our report on his death, news of his death reached TMZ on Wednesday, via someone “claiming to be a representative of Lewis.” The outlet later apologized for the original report.
Lewis suffered a stroke in 2019. Fans were informed via a note on his official Instagram account, which was constantly updated until his death.
The note also reveals Lewis was working on a gospel album at the time and ended with a Bible verse.
