Chaka Khan Sued After Family Dog Allegedly Attacks Neighbor

Chaka Khan has been embroiled in a legal battle after her dog allegedly attacked a neighbor at her Los Angeles property.

According to legal documents obtained by The Blast, the “Ain’t Nobody” singer is being sued for breach of contract and violating the terms of her lease, including not having a certain number of pets on the premises.

Khan is being sued by a Los Angeles property owner in Santa Monica, California. The owner claims the veteran singer signed a lease agreement that will expire on October 31, 2023.

Khan and his agent reportedly assured the owner that he would vacate the property and it would be handed over by November 1, 2023. While the property owner claimed they were upholding their end of the bargain, the opposite was the case for the Queen of Funk.

The owner claims Khan “breached the lease by failing to vacate the property by November 1, 2023, [2] rent the property to his son and other occupants who violate the provisions of the lease.”

In addition, the ten-time Grammy Award winner allegedly failed to “pay deposit rent” and changed “locks and/or entry codes to prevent (the owner) from gaining access to the property. However, the culmination of the lawsuit alleges that Khan violated the rules of not having pets on the property, resulting in an accident.

The filing states the singer, whose real name is Yvette Marie Stevens, violated regulations by “placing one or more pets on the property, contrary to the terms of the lease. Based on information and belief, the pet in question, a dog, chased and injured a neighbor, who is now seeking recovery from (its owner.)”

The aggrieved property owner claims to have been “ruined in court” over the dog incident and more and wants Khan to pay damages in an amount determined at trial.

They also want him to bear the cost of legal fees and pay other relief as the court deems appropriate. Khan has yet to respond to the suit.

Chaka Khan Apologizes for Rolling Stone’s Greatest Singers List

Khan’s legal battle comes months after he made headlines for invoking Rolling Stone’s Greatest Singers of All Time list. The list puts the “Do Love What You Feel” singer at number 29 ahead of singers like Aaliyah (40), Ariana Grande (43), and Toni Braxton (48). However, his old nemesis Mary J. Blighe placed above him in 25th place.

Christmas Queen Mariah Carey was ranked No.5 with Adele taking the No. 22. During an interview with Andrew Goldman on his podcast “The Originals,” Khan was congratulated on his inclusion on the prestigious list. However, he looked displeased.

“I don’t even know what you’re talking about, so obviously this doesn’t mean anything to me. These people don’t measure up or validate me in any way,” he told the host.

Elaborating on the entree’s position, Khan disagreed with the placement, describing Carey’s place as “payola or something.” As for Adele’s position, he quipped “Okay, I quit,” but when he found out about Blige’s placement, Khan lost it, declaring, “These b—hes are blind! They’re blind as king bats! They need hearing aids. This must be a child— Helen Keller’s son!”

He however agreed with the placement of Aretha Franklin as No.1 and Whitney Houston as No.2. Unfortunately, social media did not agree with Khan’s reaction and slammed him. He later apologized for his remarks, saying he did not intend to hurt anyone.

“Recently, I was asked about a ‘greatest singer of all time’ list and instead of questioning the need for such a list, I was pitted against other artists and I took the bait,” his statement began. “As artists, we are unfairly put into ‘boxes,’ ‘categories’ or into ‘lists.’ Being an artist or musician is not a competition. It is a gift, for which I am very grateful.”

Khan concluded his statement, “It is not my intention to cause pain or inconvenience to anyone. To anyone who felt this way, I sincerely apologize. Thank you for all the love everyone has shown me, unconditionally.”
