Cheryl Burke is celebrating a new milestone in her sobriety journey. The professional dancer has been more open about her triumphs and challenges since she decided to quit drinking in 2018.

She initially told fans that she had been sober for two years in September 2020, crediting the death of her father and her engagement to her now ex-husband, Matthew Lawrence, as the catalyst for the life-changing transformation. Cheryl Burke has advocated forgiveness & self-love at the center of her sobriety journey

Burke didn’t give up as he took to social media over the weekend to celebrate entering his sixth year. Sharing a selfie that emphasized her natural face and freckles, the “Dancing with the Stars” alum began in her lengthy caption:

“It’s been 5 years since I started my recovery journey. As I entered my 6th year I realized I had found a new purpose that I never thought existed. The great thing about sobriety is that it’s not always a straight line of progress & like most things in life it comes with rough patches.”

He explained that the difference sobriety made in his life was that he gained “more awareness” of challenges, especially seeing his loved ones, colleagues and friends for who they really are.

“One thing I try to practice is forgiveness & less judgment when it comes to my past actions, current feelings or my addictions. Instead of judging myself today, I can say that I am actually grateful for the way I handled everything that happened in front of me because my body, mind & soul only protected me,” continued the 39-year-old.

However, he resisted the temptation because he knew the damage that carrying the bottle could cause. Finally, he concluded:

“Overall, I have a life and build a relationship with myself that I didn’t know existed before. And I owe it to God and my recovery. If you have been thinking about entering this journey, I strongly suggest you see what it can do for you. Sending you all love. Thank you for being by my side for these 5 years.”

Next, he noted that people need to spend less time scrolling through social media and focus on doing “a million other more productive things.” “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody” guest star recommends that fans try to make eye contact with someone and have dinner without a phone so the conversation can flow smoothly.

His third piece of advice is an emphasis on self-forgiveness and changing negative self-talk to a positive perspective. In Burke’s words:

“This is still something I am working on. You want to focus on self-talk — that voice in your head- and change the perspective to positive from negative. Hopefully, the goal is to start forgiving others. Not for that deed, but so that you don’t hold on to that burden.”

Finally, the “Dance Moms” star advocates seeking professional help, noting that going to therapy is an act of self-love and self-care.
