In a teaser trailer released Tuesday ahead of Wednesday’s episode, Burke recalls being whipped by her high school boyfriend.
Burke’s tragic revelation came as she, Jada Pinkett Smith, Adrienne Banfield-Norris and expert psychologists discussed trauma bonding.
“Traumatic bonding” occurs when a narcissist repeats the cycle of abuse with another person which drives the need for validation and affection from the abused person. Bonding trauma often occurs in romantic relationships; however, it can also occur between co-workers, non-romantic family members and friends, according to amfmtreatment.com.
Burke Explains She Was Whipped By Her High School Boyfriend
“In high school – I’ll never forget – the person I was with for about four years whipped me with a belt,” revealed the 38-year-old professional dancer. “And I had bruises all over my leg. I remember his parents watching him — not doing anything.”
He went into further detail telling Smith and Norris, “And it’s not like he hit me; he whip me.”
It bears repeating that this relationship took place in high school.
Earlier this year, Burke filed for divorce from Lawrence.
According to the legal document, obtained by Explosionshe filed for dissolution of marriage in Los Angeles County Court on February 18, 2022.
The former celebrity couple tied the knot on May 23, 2019, ending their relationship of just under 3 years. According to reports, the couple began dating in 2017 but met in 2006 after Lawrence’s older brother — Joey — was cast on ‘DWTS.’ The couple dated for several years after their meeting, but got back together in 2017 and eventually married.
Lawrence proposed to Burke on May 3, 2018, on her 34th birthday. He hinted at the reason for their divorce on social media in August.

The dancing pro uploaded a video to TikTok with a not-so-subtle message about cheaters.
Burke stared blankly into the camera without makeup and shook her head.
“When he said he wouldn’t talk to her again, I found a text message, viagra, and a necklace hidden in a pair of his shoes,” the caption read.

Burke didn’t name or call out her ex-husband outright, but she hasn’t been in a relationship since the dissolution of her marriage.
