Chicago migrants crammed on sidewalk with belongings after being locked out of police station

Some immigrants in Chicago were locked out of the police station where they were housed as they gathered on crowded sidewalks Wednesday with all their belongings, as the city prepared for more arrivals.

Outside the 1st District police station at 17th and State streets, immigrants, along with mattresses, furniture, rugs and personal belongings were crowded on the sidewalk, Fox Chicago reported.

The doors to the police station were locked and the lobby of the building was empty, the news report said.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the Chicago Police Department and city officials.

A Venezuelan immigrant told the news channel that he had been staying in the lobby of the police station but that it had been closed on Wednesday.

He said the migrants were told to move their belongings outside and portable toilets were placed on the sidewalk.

Several police stations in the city have housed immigrants who have arrived since last year.

Shelters currently house more than 9,800 migrants, while another 3,000 are still waiting to be placed somewhere.

More than 17,000 immigrants have come to Chicago since last August.

Many were transported from Texas as part of Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s plan to move immigrants from border towns to so-called “sanctuary” cities to pay attention to the influx of asylum seekers.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson announced on Wednesday that he plans to visit the US-Mexico border. He did not reveal any details about the planned visit.

“So, going to the border is to make sure that everybody knows that my administration is committed to making sure that we bring together the full power of government at every level to make sure that these families, who, in fact, they’re not illegal, they’re asylum seekers, they’re protected by international law,” Johnson said at a press conference.

He said the city expected as many as 22 buses full of migrants on Wednesday.

On the same day, residents of Chicago’s South Side also announced a lawsuit against the city in an effort to stop housing immigrants in schools, parks and police stations, the news outlet said.

“It’s not about the immigrants themselves, it’s about the city’s response to them and the lies and untruths told by the administration. And they are not working in Chicago’s best interest. If you call it a humanitarian effort, they shouldn’t be sleeping in the police station on the floor,” said organizer Brian Mullins.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker joined a growing number of Democrats who have criticized Biden’s border policy when he sent a letter to the president on Monday with a list of demands outlining how the federal government’s response to the border crisis has been inadequate.

Pritzker complained that more than 15,000 immigrants were shipped “like cargo” to Illinois from border states “in an inhumane attempt to score political points.”

Pritzker wrote that the number of migrant arrivals is “exceeding our ability to provide assistance to the refugee population.”

“Unfortunately, the response and assistance that Illinois provides to these asylum seekers is not matched by the support of the federal government. Most critically, the lack of government intervention and coordination at the border has created an untenable situation for Illinois,” the letter said.
