Chicago police shot a dog early Sunday after three officers were allegedly bitten — but a neighbor who witnessed the shooting said the dog was not aggressive.
The encounter happened just before 11:30 a.m. in the city’s West Garfield Park neighborhood, the Chicago Police Department said.
Officers were conducting an unknown investigation at a West Wilcox Avenue building when a “female offender attempted to intervene.”
An unidentified person then unleashed two dogs on police and three of the officers allegedly suffered dog bites, according to the department.
One of the officers fired his gun, hitting one of the dogs.
Neighbors said, however, that the fangs were not suitable for violent use, according to local reports.

Brenda Cunningham, who lives next door to the dog’s owner, said police had just arrested one of her sons while they were walking near the dog’s property.
A neighbor and his two dogs came out to see what was happening, sparking fear in officers, he said.
“When the dog comes out, the police become aggressive: ‘Get the dog, get the dog.’ They caught the dogs. There are two dogs there. They all grabbed the dog,” Cunningham told ABC 7.

“The dogs have never been aggressive with these officers … The dogs have never come after the officer to bite him or anything like that, ma’am. No, he didn’t. The officer just pulled out his gun and shot twice.”
Another neighbor said the pet was shot in the face.
The dog was taken to animal care and control, but its condition is unclear.
All three officers were taken to an area hospital and are in “good condition,” the CHP said.
The woman has been arrested on pending charges, although it is unclear what role she played in the chaos.
