Child rape suspect escapes cop car during snowstorm, turns himself in 45 minutes later

A suspected child rapist fled from a police car during a Memphis snowstorm — and then turned back less than an hour later, having proved no match for the bone-chilling weather.

Demarkus Davis, 20, was being transported to the Shelby County Jail Sunday night as snow blanketed the streets of Memphis, when he somehow managed to escape from a patrol car while in handcuffs, according to the Memphis Police Department.

A corrections officer driving Davis over to Memphis police just before 11 p.m. to report an escaped inmate, who was wanted on a warrant charging him with two counts of child rape, Action News 5 station reported.

Memphis police released a description of the fleeing victim, revealing that he was wearing blue jeans and a hooded sweatshirt.

Temperatures in Memphis on Sunday plunged to 13 degrees as the snow piled up, making it a bad night for Davis to be out on the streets in his light clothing.

Less than 45 minutes after his brazen escape, David reportedly stopped a stranger and asked them to call the police so he could surrender.

He was picked up at about 11:35pm about half a mile from where he fled.
