Chris Christie’s 4-year, multimillion-dollar beach house project sparks neighbor questions

In 2018, Chris Christie bought a $2.9 million New Jersey beach house — only to spend the next four years and millions more tearing it down and building a new property, The Post has learned.

Located in Bay Head, the oceanfront property is currently worth more than $5.5 million, according to Zillow estimates.

However, sources told The Post that they are not sure how Christie, a Republican currently running for the White House, has financed these expenses since leaving the governor’s office several years ago.

A governor’s salary is $175,000 a year.

“I don’t even know what that man is doing now… How can he live this lifestyle?” insiders say.

It’s unclear whether Christie’s plans to list the home for profit. The Post has reached out for comment.

Before and after photos of the site show the larger, new home, which now occupies nearly 7,000 square feet. The previous residence was smaller, spanning a little over 4,000 square feet.

Completed in 2022, the house is a stone’s throw from the birthplace of Scientology and home to Rock & Roll Hall of Fame members of one of his favorite bands, The Record.

The new home consists of four stories with several balconies and a two-car garage.

A previous description of the now-demolished property said, “a classic home designed for summer or year-round living – enjoy the private landscaped backyard with pool and spa, or relax in the breezy sunroom.”

When Christie first shopped for real estate in the area in 2016, he told the media it was “nobody’s business” that he was buying a house.

Christie served as New Jersey’s 55th governor from 2010 to 2018. Over the past few years when he was running for president for the first time, records show the 32 days he spent campaigning cost American taxpayers $193,890. Taxpayers also paid over $600,000 to cover his security costs.

A lawsuit was brought, alleging he “improperly forced New Jersey taxpayers to cover the governor’s security costs and other essential expenses while pursuing the presidency.” But the suit was later dismissed.

After leaving office, Christie worked at ABC News as a contributor. In January 2019, he later published a book titled “Let Me Finish.”

In 2020, during the outbreak, he registered as a lobbyist where he was paid $240,000 on behalf of a Tennessee-based chain of addiction treatment centers and three New Jersey hospital systems seeking federal funding.

He wrote a second book in 2021, titled “Republican Rescue.”

Meanwhile, Christie and wife Mary Pat still own their 7,000-square-foot main house in Menhdam, which they bought in 1998 for $775,000.

Situated on 6 acres, the home is currently valued at $2.1 million.
