Chris Rock, Ali Wong & Other Comedy Stars Turn Down Offer To Host Golden Globes

Comedian Chris Rock has officially declined to host the next Golden Globes, scheduled for January 7. Actor Ali Wong was also approached for a hosting gig but refused.

The Golden Globes have officially announced the award nominations; however, according to CNNthe organizers have yet to find a lawyer for the ceremony scheduled for January 7. A famous actor, comedian, and two-time Oscar host, Rock has now turned down hosting gigs, just like several other big names in comedy.

The “Grown Ups” star was previously offered the hosting role for the last Golden Globes, which she also turned down. His previous appearance at a major awards show was in 2022, at the Oscars, where actor Will Smith famously slapped him for making jokes about Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head and alopecia battle.

Rock received a nomination at the Golden Globes for Best Performance in a Television Stand-Up Comedy for his controversial Netflix special, “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage.” Another comedy star, Wong, has also turned down a hosting gig. He earned a nomination for his performance in the Netflix series “Beef.”

Rock and Wong are just two of several big names in comedy and film who have declined to host the Golden Globes. Will Arnett, Sean Hayes and Jason Bateman, three co-hosts of the popular “SmartLess” podcast, turned down a joint offer to host the awards ceremony.

Two sources spoke CNN about the bid, which would be the first three-time Golden Globes hosting situation since Louis Gossett Jr., Leslie Nielsen, and Jane Seymour ran in 1993. Offers have also been made to Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who have successfully co-hosted home of the Golden Globes four times.

However, Fey and Poehler have previously stated that they will no longer be hosting the Globes and seem to be sticking to it. A source said, “They won’t do it again. They are done.” Another source close to the host search has told CNN that the organizers are having “three very serious conversations” with potential hosts.

There Are Still Other Options To Host The Golden Globes

There is one possible solution to the host conundrum, which uses one of CBS’ stars. The Golde Globes officially moved its broadcast from NBC to the station, which provides a variety of options for comedy talent to host the three-hour awards ceremony.

When the Golden Globes were still under NBC, they used this method several times, finding big names on the station like Jimmy Fallon, Andy Samberg and Seth Meyers. The Oscars have also taken a similar route by announcing ABC star Jimmy Kimmel as host for the fourth time.

As for the many big names turning down the chance to host the Globes, it’s actually not strange. While the show may seem like an incredible opportunity for up and coming comedians, many seasoned veterans would think otherwise. The gig comes with a lot of preparation and often receives heavy criticism and negative feedback.

One celebrity publicist called hosting a “thankless job.” Another high-profile publicist who spoke about hosting awards shows in general said it was really “not worth it”. They added, “There is a lot of politics. It’s not easy and it’s not fun anymore.”

Awards Show Will Feature Many Stars

Despite having no host for the ceremony, which is scheduled for a few weeks away, preparations for the Golden Globes are in full swing, and expect many big names in the industry. The ceremony is expected to feature attendees such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese, Margot Robbie, Cillian Murphy, Ryan Gosling, and Robert DeNiro, who may be nominated for their performances in several hit films.

Other big names expected for the Globes include Selena Gomez, Quinta Brunson, Meryl Streep, Emma Stone, Jennifer Aniston, and Natalie Portman.

The Golden Globes will launch Hollywood’s awards season and revive the industry after the Actors and Writers strike that dampened much of 2023.
