A bare-chested Kelly Clarkson asked Applegate, “Are you a naturally optimistic person when you’re sick or when you’re struggling with something, because I love humor, and really dark humor. I don’t know how you deal with things.”

“I want them to feel comfortable that we can laugh about it,” he continued. “I have a song I wrote called, ‘Disaby Baby, hurry down the chimney tonight. I can’t have my wheelchair not fit on it.’”

Applegate Admits MS Demotivated Him At First

“Honestly, being diagnosed with MS last year and what happened to my body, to my mind, to my spirit, to everything… of course I didn’t want to be around anyone or talk about it. But, I had to go through work. I wasn’t forced to work, but I made sure we finished the show,” he said.

The show Applegate is referring to is the third season of “Dead to Me” on Netflix starring Linda Cardellini and James Mardsen.

“I tried as hard as I could through it and it was really, really hard, and I slept for months. Then all of a sudden I had to come out again and be this person who, you know, people have seen me as this person for almost 40 years and I’m different now,” Applegate explained. “I don’t want to be a fish in a fish tank, but you know, I’ll do my best to get through it.
