Didn’t realize the extent of the destruction until this morning when I was able to see a bit of the internet.”
The statement revealed that the entire city was completely destroyed, with people seeking transport to the airport due to lack of electricity, shops closed, and homes lost. They added, “It took us several tries to gain access to the exit. We succeeded. It is a tragedy.”

As the extent of the destruction caused by the Maui fires became clear, concerns arose about the timeliness of official warnings to residents. BBC reported that evacuations began locally on Tuesday, initially followed by assurances that the fire was fully contained. However, by the next day, a fast-moving fire had consumed Lahaina, with officials reporting that about 80% of the town had been destroyed.
