Career
Gibson began his ice hockey career at Notre Dame College. He began his career with the Notre Dame Hounds (Midget AAA), where he won the Transparent Cup national title in 2009. Gibson was selected in the first round of the 2009 CHL Import Draft by the Chicoutimi Saguenéens of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Prior to the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, he was considered the best goaltender in the QMJHL.
Gibson was the first goaltender selected in the 2011 NHL Draft from the Canadian Hockey League. Gibson was traded by the Maple Leafs to the New York Islanders on September 17, 2015, along with four other prospects, in exchange for Michael Grabner. He made his NHL debut for the Islanders against the Washington Capitals. Gibson was re-signed by the Islanders on August 15, 2016, to a one-year, two-way deal for $660,000. Gibson earned a bronze medal at the 2010 IIHF World U-18 Championship in Belarus at the age of 17. He was selected to represent Finland in the 2012 World Junior Championships in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta.
