Biography of Christopher Plummer

Arthur Christopher Orme Plummer was born in the city of Toronto in Canada. He was the only child of Isabella Mary (Abbott), secretary to the Dean of Science at McGill, and John Orme Plummer, a stockbroker. He is the great-grandson of Canada’s third Prime Minister, John Abbott (from 1891 to 1892), and the great-grandson of Anglican priest John Bethune. He is of Scottish, English, and Anglo-Irish descent. Plummer grew up in Senneville, Quebec, near Montreal.

He speaks English and French well. He began studying to be a concert pianist as a child, but he acquired an early sensibility for the theater and began performing while still in high school in Montreal. He acquired the basics of acting as a student at the Montreal Repertory Theatre.
