Cillian Murphy Took Inspiration From David Bowie For Oppenheimer Weight Loss

Cillian Murphy’s delicate silhouette as J. Robert Oppenheimer in the magnum opus of war, “Oppenheimer,” had an unlikely inspiration, given that director Christopher Nolan sent him a photo of singer David Bowie. Murphy’s diet has become part of Hollywood lore, with him appearing as thin as the role demands.

Both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” will go head-to-head this weekend, possibly dethroning Tom Cruise’s run with the latest “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One.” And Oppenheimer’s star isn’t Matt Damon or Robert Downey Jr; it’s the skinny Cillian Murphy, whom we remember from “Peaky Blinders” and partly from “A Quiet Place.”

This was his magnum opus, the film in which he starred, and when Nolan approached him for the role of a lifetime, Murphy was understandably excited. Since it’s Nolan’s film, written as a first-person narration of the titular character, Murphy has a lot of weight on his shoulders. So his first preparation was to stop him, in the most physical sense.

Cillian Murphy told the New York Times, “I like to act with my body, and Oppenheimer has a very different physique and silhouette, which I wanted to correct. I had to lose some weight, and we worked with clothes and tailoring; he was very thin, almost skeleton, and exists in martinis and cigarettes.”

Even Emily Blunt, who plays Kitty, Oppenheimer’s wife, feels ridiculous. He told Extra TV that Murphy has a “monumental effort” and that “he can only eat one almond a day. He’s so skinny.” Matt Damon also talked about how Murphy never accepted a dinner date with the cast because he never ate!

He smoked a few fake cigarettes for the role, and Murphy swears the next part will be a non-smoking part. Meanwhile, single almond or not, Murphy cautions against extreme diets because it’s easy to become “a little bit competitive with yourself,” which he feels is “not healthy, I don’t advise it.”

Here’s a Nolan-style trailer.

In a recent interview with “MTV Movies,” Murphy mentioned how Nolan sent him a photo of David Bowie to reference how Oppenheimer would look in the film. Says Murphy, “We worked closely with our costume designer to design the costume. And especially, I wanted to get her silhouette. She’s very fragile and slender, and I wanted to get that silhouette right.”

It’s not just the main character’s physique that takes a page out of David Bowie’s lookbook, but the clothes, including a porkpie hat and tailored loose clothing. The costume was inspired by Bowie’s Thin White Duke persona and the aesthetic of the musician’s “Young Americans” album, released in 1975.

Murphy told MTV, “Chris sends me a few pictures of Bowie a day, certain periods of Bowie’s career, like the Thin White Duke and around the time of ‘Young Americans’. He has these big pants and is very skinny but very cool. So we used that, oddly enough, for some of Oppenheimer’s pants.”

Barbie Vs. Oppenheimer, Or Barbienheimer!

Meanwhile, due to all the hype behind “Barbienheimer,” Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” opened to $155 million domestically, numbers usually better associated with films with male leads or established franchises. This put it well above the $100 million or so expected and made for one of the biggest weekends of the year.

Meanwhile, it’s not as if “Oppenheimer” is slouching and managed an $80.5 million opening weekend domestically, once again topping forecasts. Obviously, these two films made a killing for their first weekend, and now wait and watch to see if the following weekends or the coming months make “Oppenheimer” jump ahead or if “Barbie” will maintain the lead.

Did the audience want more atomic bombs, or did they feel the “Energy?”
