Clarence finished his primary and secondary education at St. Pius X High School and subsequently at St. John Vianney’s Minor Seminary on the Isle of Hope.
Clarence claims to have dropped out of seminary after the murder of Martin Luther King, Jr. He overheard another student say after the shooting, “Good, I hope the son of a bitch dies,” and he didn’t think the church was doing enough to combat racism. Following that, he studied at Missouri’s Conception Seminary College. On the suggestion of a nun, he registered as a sophomore transfer student at Worcester, Massachusetts’ College of the Holy Cross.
When he was a student there, he was important in the formation of the Black Student Union. When several black students were punished for breaking school regulations, he and other students walked out of class to protest the disparity. A group of priests allowed black students back into the institution. While in college, he participated in anti-war demonstrations and witnessed the riots in Harvard Square in 1970 directly. This is ascribed to his disillusionment with communist causes and subsequent shift to conservatism.
